Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda featured in the panel “Decarbonizing Industry – The Plastics Commitment”
The Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda made a significant appearance at COP30 Brazil, in a debate promoted by APIP – Portuguese Plastics Industry Association, held at the Portugal Pavilion in Belém do Pará. The panel, entitled “Decarbonizing Industry – The Plastics Commitment”, highlighted the transformative role of this Agenda for climate transition and the sustainable competitiveness of the plastics industry in Portugal.
Moderated by Cátia Morais (Communication Manager of APIP), the debate brought together leading experts to discuss challenges, opportunities, and the real impact of ongoing initiatives.
Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda – A lever for decarbonization and innovation
With 49 entities involved, proven results, and a strategic vision aligned with European and international carbon neutrality goals, the Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda – led by Logoplaste Innovation Lab, initiated by APIP, and co-financed by PRR – was one of the highlights of the panel.
During the debate, Nuno Aguiar (Technical Director of APIP) presented the evolution of the Agenda, highlighting three essential pillars:
1. Innovation and new materials
- Development of more sustainable, recyclable polymer solutions with a smaller environmental footprint;
- Pilot projects that already demonstrate a significant reduction in emissions associated with production.
2. Energy efficiency and process transformation
- Implementation of low-emission technologies and optimization of production systems;
- Increased digitization and intelligent process control.
3. Circularity and strengthening of value chains
- Creation of new models for collecting, recycling, and reincorporating materials;
- Acceleration of eco-design and integration of circular and bio-based feedstocks.
Key highlights of the debate
The following key moments from the presentation of the Sustainable Plastics Agenda at COP 30 stand out:
International cooperation as a catalyst
Jardel Saraiva, CEO of Globoplast (Brazil), reinforced the importance of knowledge sharing between Portugal and Brazil, especially in the transition to circular raw materials and the adoption of decarbonization technologies.
Measurable results
Several examples of progress already achieved by the Agenda were presented, including:
- new polymer formulations with lower carbon intensity;
- increased energy efficiency in industrial lines;
- productivity improvements through digitization;
- strengthening of waste recycling and recovery capacity.
Alignment with European policies
The Agenda stands out as one of the national projects most closely aligned with:
- the European Green Deal;
- Fit for 55;
- the European Strategy for Plastics;
- and the principles of the Circular Economy.
Economic and social impact
The debate also highlighted:
- the creation of skilled jobs;
- the strengthening of digital and green skills;
- and the contribution to the strategic autonomy of Portuguese industry.
Sustainable Plastics: an example of collaborative transformation
The panel highlighted that the Sustainable Plastics Mobilizing Agenda is not just a project, but rather a platform for joint transformation, where companies, research centers, and industry entities work together to accelerate:
- carbon neutrality;
- circularity;
- technological innovation;
- and the global competitiveness of the plastics industry.
This initiative, now internationally recognized, demonstrates how Portugal is positioning itself as a benchmark in the development of sustainable solutions for the sector.
Review the debate:
APIP would like to thank the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the speakers, and the audience who attended this important moment at COP30 Brazil.
